On most festive occasions like Diwali, Holi etc you would be expected wear sarees. You can either wear designer net or silk sarees during this time. Festive sarees can be moderately heavy and you can choose matching jewellery with it.

Saree For Fancy Lunch

If you are going out for a lunch with your girl gang or going to kitty party, you need a contemporary saree. Choose plain but stylish saree in chiffon, net and georgette. You can also drape saree differently to get compliments for your style.

Saree For Puja

When you are invited to a puja, or religious ceremony, choose a traditional saree. You could either wear a plain kanjeevaram saree or Bengali tant cotton sarees with broad borders.

Saree for Travel and outing purpose

For traveling, you can choose synthetic light weight sarees. These are comfortable and easy to manage. Traditional way to wear a saree

Different regions of India have their own distinct forms of draping a Saree. Some of these are outlined below:

  1. Gujarati way: This version of draping, commonly known as the seedha pallu way, is also found in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar. Instead of opening to the left, the pleats are tucked so that they open to the right. Then, the pallu is taken to the back and brought over the right shoulder. It is then spread across the chest, and the left edge is tucked in the petticoat at the back.

  2. Maharashtra method: Instead of the usual five-and-a-half meters, the sari in this version measures eight meters. One portion of the sari is drawn up between the legs and tucked in behind at the waist, while another portion is draped as a pallu over the bosom. Thus it forms a kind of divided sari, allowing greater freedom of movement.

  3. Tamilian version: Like the Maharashtra version, the saree in this version, too, measures eight meters. After wrapping around the waist, the pleats are positioned along the left leg. The rest of the sari is taken over the left shoulder, wrapped once again round the waist and tucked on the left side.

  4. Bengali style: The saree is worn pleat-less; it is wrapped around the waist, brought back to the right side and the pallu is thrown over the left shoulder. The pallu is then brought up under the right arm and once again cast over the left shoulder.

  5. Odisha Method: Nivi Drape - This method is from where the current popular method of draping has came from. In this method of draping one end of saree (opposite end from the pallu) is tucked into the petticoat from the front and then draped once around the waist. It is different as pleats are formed and tucked in the middle facing left. The remaining saree is then hung over the left shoulder to cover the chest. The pallu can also be neatly pleated and pinned to the shoulder, a convenient way to manage and the saree and ensure that pallu stays in place. Today the way we saree, is derived from the Nivi Drape.

What are the modern ways to drape a saree?

From runways to reality, from the dhoti style to the pants style, here are some amazing saree draping
ideas to make you head out flaunting one of these with swag right away!

  1. Scarf Style: Drape the saree in the regular way until you reach the part where you work the pallu. Instead of pinning it up on your shoulder, wrap it around your neck. Who needs to worry about a neckpiece when you have a statement style like this one?

  2. Pants Style: Ditch the regular underskirt and go all out by tucking the saree around your favorite pair of jeggings, denims or straight pants. They look absolutely riveting and this look is super easy to carry.

  3. Belt it Right: Adding a slim belt to your saree clinches it at the waist giving you a very defined and hourglass look. It's the easiest way to accentuate your waist and look oh so stylish.

  4. Tunic/Kurti Saree: Try teaming up your handloom saree with a tunic or kurta instead of a belt for that very art lover kind of vibe. It makes for a wonderful office party/ lunch look.

  5. Dhoti Saree: This saree draping style is gaining a lot of popularity amongst the fashionistas, thanks to its superior style quotient. Not only does it allow for extra movement, but is also sure to look great with winter blazers and jackets, for an eclectic look.

  6. The Butterfly Style: The butterfly style saree is the BOLLYWOOD version of saree draping as its extremely popular with celebs such as Shilpa Shetty, Deepika, Katrina and many other divas. It involves very firmly and thinly plated pallu that bares out the midriff.

  7. The Cape Saree: Capes are still in vogue as they look very classy and elegant. Try a cape(long or short) over your saree to give it a very contemporary look.

  8. Chhotu Saree: The name is as appealing as the drape itself. The style has your saree stopping short at the lower calves, it’s about six inches above the ground and supposed to draw attention to your ankles and even footwear. If you want to try further, add another layer underneath the short layer to make it long.
