Amidst all the controversy, the delay and the hula boo, Padmavat finally made it to the silver screen in glorious style. The magnum opus from Sanjay Leela Bhansali has been garnering rave reviews from critics and masses alike and besides the historical performances from its ensemble cast, the LOOKS of the stars- their attire, the jewels , make up, everything, especially Padmavati aka Deepika Padukone have left everyone spellbound.
Deeepika's look as the Rajput Rani Padmavati has been kept very earthy, royal and authentic true to the heritage of Rajasthan. Designer duo Rimple and Harpreet Narula, the team behind her rave looks put in lots of hard work and research to re create the 14th century aura and authenticity in the garments. They travelled the length and breadths of the state, read relevant documents and even tried mixing different embroidery styles to give DEEPIKA her most stunning avatar as Rani Padmavati.
Deepika's ethnic looks are definitely going to give brides and fashion enthusiasts inspiration for the rest of the year ahead for sure. From her unibrow, the septum rings, heavy jewelry, gota patti work, everything is inspiring and awe worthy. The actress has garnered a lot of praise from the designers who elaborated that each outfit was extremely heavy and difficult to carry and Deepika never complained and worked long hours in such tedious looks.
THE EMBROIDERIES
For the ornate court looks for Deepika, a vintage, aged effect by mixing both Raato and Dhaulo embroideries were used. ‘Mukke Ka Kaam’ which is a very fine intricate embroidery done by couching gold and silver metal threads over the base fabric has been used extensively. Special blocks developed from Sanganer and Bagru for the block-printing were imbibed on her outfits. Some of the prints have up to 24 different colors in one motif and as many blocks were used to achieve the effect. The block prints were further detailed with hand-painting and embroideries. The prints were finely layered with gota work using badla wires that were given to weavers to create authentic gota. The garments were aged and treated with various concoctions and materials such as natural dyes, indigo, pomegranate, rose to achieve the natural colors that were prevalent then.
There was lehenriya, brocade work, gota lafa, kota cotton and lots more textile and embellishment work coming together to create each lehenga for the royal queen. Phew, that really sounds like a lot of detail!
Hats off to Deepika for staying so authentic to her character that she spent 3-4 hrs each day to get into the looks and even did lots of stunt work and dancing in them. The song GHOOMAR is a fine example of how dedicated the actor is as she swirled and twirled effortlessly in those 30kg lehengas! The bright colors, Rajwada designs, gota work, everything is just so stunning that it make you want to shop for a royal wedding now!
THE JEWELS
