THE NINE COLORS OF NAVRATRIS

Celebrations and festivities are in their full bloom in India right now. And right now the nation is celebrating NAVRATRIS or DURGA PUJA in all its glory and joy. Navratri is an auspicious Hindu festival specifically dedicated to the worship of Goddess Durga. The Hindu community all over the globe celebrate these 9 days with full gusto. There is as much worshipping as there is the celebratory mood with DANDIYA, and much more!

Navratri 2015 begins on October 13 with Ghatasthapana and will end on October 22 with Navami  or Vijayadashami. These festival is celebrated in honor of Goddess Durga and her various AVATARS. The entire Navratri festival is about praying, fasting as well as savoring delicacies, dancing and just enjoying for the nine days duration that ends with a bang on DUSSEHRA.

Did you know that each of the nine days have a different color significance attached to them? That it is considered very auspicious to flaunt that particular color on each of the days of the NAVRATRI? Based on the goddess's avatar that is being worshipped on that day, there are nine lucky colors that you should be wearing on each of these 9 days in order to ring in luck, happiness and prosperity.

Here is the list-

First Day (13th October, 2015) – RED

This day is dedicated to Shailaputri Maa, the first form of Goddess Durga on the first day of  Navadurga. The idol of Goddess is dressed in a bright red saree while the Ghatasthapana setup of earthen pot is being done.  It is considered good to wear the same RED shade on this day.

Second Day (14th October, 2015) - ROYAL BLUE

The second day is for worshipping Maa Bharmacharini . There is a legend which says that this goddess enlightens elegant forms with power, divine and spiritual grace. Hence the colour of the day for devotees is Royal Blue.

Third Day (15th October, 2015) – YELLOW

The third Devi to be worshipped is Maa Chandraghanta, who is the symbol of peace, serenity, beauty and bravery in one’s life. The Goddess wears a White attire.  Yellow is the colour of the day and incidentally, the Sindhoor Tritiya Sowbhagya Teej is also observed on this day.

Fourth Day (16th October, 2015) – GREEN

The fourth goddess to be worshipped during Navdurga is Kushmanda . She is considered as the creator of the entire universe. The goddess is draped in Red saree and on this day Bhouma Chaturthi is followed. The colour for the fourth day to be worn is Green.

Fifth Day (17th October, 2015) – GREY

The goddess who killed the demons Skandamata (the fourth avatar of Maa Durga) is worshipped on this day.  Worshippers observe the Upang Lalitha Gauri Vrata on this day.  The goddess wears blue on the fifth day of Navratri that is known as Panchami, and its auspicious for devotees to wear GREY.

Sixth Day (18th October, 2015) - ORANGE

Maa Katyayani is another avatar of Goddess Durga worshipped on the sixth day of Navratri.  Maha Shashti is celebrated on the sixth day and the deity is seen in a Yellow saree. Its lucky for people to wear Orange attire on this day.

Seventh Day (19th October, 2015) – WHITE

Kaalratri  Mahamaya protects all her devotees from trouble and negative powers. This seventh avatar of Maa Durga grants freedom and happiness. The goddess on this day is supposed to be adorned with a Green coloured saree. The Maha Saptami begins on this day and Utsava Puja is performed. The lucky color to be worn this day is White.

Eighth Day (20th October, 2015) –PINK

The eighth avatar of Goddess Durga, Maha Gauri is worshipped on this day. She is goddess who helps to purify souls and forgive sins. Saraswati Mata Puja is conducted on this day and Pink is regarded as the colour of the day for all the devotees.

Ninth Day/ Tenth Day (21th October, 2015) – SKY BLUE

The Ninth and tenth Navratri is on the same day this year and goddess Siddhidatri is the last form of Maa Durga who is worshipped on this day. She is known for her great supernatural powers and Maha Navami puja is done in her honour. Also people do the Kanya puja on this auspicious day. Sky Blue is the auspicious colour for the last day.
