RAJASTHANI WEDDINGS

RAJASTHANI WEDDINGS

Rajasthan is associated with all things royal and Rajputi weddings are no different. The weddings are resplendent with opulent decorations, vibrant colours, traditional and folk dance form and music. Ideally, it starts with a Tilak ceremony which is like the Roka ceremony or the official announcement of the wedding followed now-a-days by Sagaai where rings are exchanged. Then comes the Ganpati Sthapana to seek the Lord's belssings and then, Pithi Dastoor( a variation of the Haldi ceremony). Next comes the  Mehfil (or sangeet), Mahira Dastoor(where Mama or maternal uncles brings the gifts to the family) .The  Palla and Janev Ceremony include exchange of gifts among the families on the morning of the wedding. Then they have the  Nikasi( where the groom is tied a sehra before he leaves the house with the Baraat to proceed to the wedding venue) followed by Varmala, where the bride and groom exchange garlands and finally Four Pheras when they circle around the holy fire and the remaining 3 are taken later at the entrance of the groom's new house.

The Rajasthani wedding lehenga is full of bright colours such as red, orange, bright yellow or pink. The lehnga choli worn by the Rajasthan ladies is generally in silk base and there is  heavy and intricate traditional hand embroideries like Sanjhi and zari on the Rajputi wedding dress. They are decorated with gemstones, semi valuable jewels, smooth strings, traditional motifs and exciting hand woven floral designs. The stunning work makes the  Rajasthani wedding sari or Ghagra even more appealing. The bride wears an Odhni over her head, much like the Chunni in Punjabi weddings. This Odhni is intensely decorated and is worn over the sari or lehenga on the big day. The odhni is mostly an hierloom passed on by generations.

Most brides wear lehenga choli in silk with heavy jewels like Rakhri, Borla (Maang tikka), Timaniyaan (diamond-studded choker), Choodiare (bangles), Bajuband (armlet), Bichhiya (toe-ring) and Nath (nose ring) are some of the mandatory Marwari jewellery to be adorned by a bride. Most jewellery is made of gold with elaborate Jadau, Meenakari and Kundan work.
