Friendship is enthusiastically observed on the first Sunday of August every year the world over. This year, friendship day falls on August 4.
The Beginning of the Tradition
It is believed that the devastating effects of the First World War that tore apart societies at large was the reason primarily that people came up with the idea to dedicate a day to celebrating friendship. The first time Friendship Day was officially celebrated was in 1935. This was in an attempt to eliminate and end all the hostilities, hatred and lack of trust that had crept in the societies.
It was seen that only a bond of friendship and a healthy camaraderie among not only neighbouring nations but individuals too could mend all these anti-social ill effects.
What had originally begun in the US quickly gained popularity in other countries as well. As more and more countries showed an active interest in celebrating this day, the day got recognised globally and came to be known as International Friendship Day.
Much later in 1997, the cartoon character Winnie the Pooh was officially declared the global ambassador for Friendship’s Day.
