VALENTINE'S DAY HISTORY
Valentine's Day or Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated in the memory of the third-century priest St Valentine of Rome. History has it that Emperor Claudius II had banned soldiers from marrying as he thought married men were unsuccessful in performing their duties. St Valentine secretly started helping these soldiers to find their mates and get married. He was thrown in jail for that by the emperor but even in jail, he continued his service towards love. He even miraculously healed the jailer's daughter of her blindness. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, which was discovered and became the reason for his martyrdom on 14th February.
More than 200 years later, Rome became Christian and Paganism was abolished giving way to a feast day for the saints proclaiming 14th February to be St Valentine's Day. The poet Chaucer in the Middle Ages was the first to link St Valentine with romantic love. This was the beginning of the tradition of courtly love, a ritual of expressing love and admiration.
The ritual started gaining popularity all through the western nations and soon spread to the world over.
It has evolved a lot since then and is now an all-encompassing celebration of any kind of love. There is an entire week dedicated to love, romance and everything in between-
