WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY?

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINE'S DAY?

Love is in the year and the entire world is alight with the luminescence of mush and romance. Lovers and friends, families and kids, this is a season with a reason to spread love everywhere. Say it with cards, flowers or romantic dates, there isn't a dearth of ways to express love for your special ones. As we approach Valentine's Day again this year, lets contemplate why this day came into being in the first place. What is the concept behind celebrating Valentine's Day and how it came to being.

It is believed that Valentine's day originated in Rome however there are more stories to state otherwise. So the story of St Valentinus and Roman Emperor Claudius II being the most popular one emerged as the strongest belief surrounding Valentine's Day. St Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. As the Roman emperoros are notorious for the tortures that they subject the prisoners too, St Valentinus also served his term till he was tortured to death. Even whist in prison, he continued to help and serve the other prisoners including the Jailors daughter who was blind.

It is believed that Valentine's care and love was so strong that the girl miraculously began to recover her eyesight. And the hopeless romantic that Valentinus was, also fell in love with her. His final act before being executed was to write her a love message signed ‘from your Valentine'. Valentine was executed on 14 February in the year 270.

It wasn't until more than 200 years later that 14 February was proclaimed St Valentine's Day. By this time Rome had become Christian and the Catholic Church was determined to stamp out any remaining paganism.  The Pope abolished this pagan festival and proclaimed 14 February Saint Valentine's Day, thus establishing this feast day on the Catholic Calendar of Saints. And this is how our Valentine's Day was born. Ever since then, the world celebrates this day of love in their own special way.
